Public Space Lecture

Lecture and Workshop “Urban Design & Public Space. Overview of concepts and methods to analyse public space”

Project Team: Cecilia De Marinis
Year: 2018
Institution: Master of Urban Planning and Design, Monash University, Melbourne, AU.

The lecture and workshop offered an overview of basic concepts and methods to analyse public space. Through reference to the most important theories and practices on public space analysis, the lecture provided students with the tools to critically observe and analyse public space.

The lecture was followed by a field workshop in which students were led to discover and investigate the suburb of Footscray, an industrial western suburb in the city of Melbourne, AU. Footscray is undertaking a process of transformation in its identity: the suburb has been quickly changing in the last years and its multiple identities are co-living and generating an interesting mix. A diverse community and a port industrial image are the main characters of the suburbs.

Students were invited to observe those characters in the public space and analyse its qualities, potentials, and challenges.
