GSA Transformative Practices: Seminars On Design Research

GSA Transformative Practices: Seminars On Design Research

Designed and conducted by Dorotea Ottaviani, Dr Mark Raymond
Year: 2020
Place and Institution: Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg

The Seminar series, held in October – November 2020, has, through conversations and presentations, addressed the topic of design and creative practice research. The seminars aimed to give valuable preparation for anyone considering registering for advanced research at the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) in the MArch (Design, Theory and Practice) and/or PhD programme.

The seminars investigated different modalities of design research and how in practice-based research, tacit and embedded knowledge surfaces in the process and production of design to reveal motivations and influences and what kind of impact it has on professional and academic practice. The seminars explored, through lectures, presentations, discussions and interviews the expansive diversity and differentiated representation of design research and how such research might inform broader practice. Invited cultural practitioners shared their research practices.
